Position Summary

The Preconstruction Engineer will support Clark Bros, Inc.’s preconstruction and estimating efforts by developing accurate digital terrain models, performing earthwork quantity takeoffs, and preparing construction models using AGTEK and AutoCAD. This position plays an important role in evaluating project feasibility, developing competitive estimates, identifying potential construction challenges, and supporting project teams through the transition from estimating to construction.

Working closely with the preconstruction, estimating, and operations teams, the Preconstruction Engineer will review civil plans, specifications, existing site conditions, and proposed grading designs to develop reliable quantity calculations and constructible earthwork models. Responsibilities include analyzing cut-and-fill quantities, evaluating site grading and material movement, assisting with quantity reconciliation, and identifying opportunities to improve project efficiency and reduce construction costs.

The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of heavy civil construction, grading and earthwork operations, and digital modeling workflows. This position requires attention to detail, technical problem-solving skills, and the ability to translate design information into practical, cost-effective construction solutions while upholding the company’s mission, values, and commitment to safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Know, understand, and uphold the company’s mission statement and core values.
  • Develop and maintain digital terrain models, existing ground surfaces, and proposed grading models using AGTEK and AutoCAD.
  • Perform detailed earthwork quantity takeoffs, including cut and fill, over-excavation, unsuitable material, import/export, and other applicable sitework quantities.
  • Review civil engineering plans, grading plans, profiles, cross-sections, specifications, and topographic survey data to understand project scope and construction requirements.
  • Interpret design surfaces, contours, spot elevations, and site geometry to develop accurate earthwork models and quantity calculations.
  • Prepare, analyze, and reconcile earthwork quantities to support cost estimating, bid preparation, and project planning.
  • Utilize AGTEK and AutoCAD to develop and refine grading models, surface comparisons, quantity reports, and supporting exhibits for estimating and construction teams.
  • Identify discrepancies, design conflicts, missing information, and potential constructability issues during the review of project documents and digital models.
  • Assist in evaluating alternative grading concepts, construction approaches, and earthwork strategies to identify cost savings and improve project efficiency.
  • Analyze haul distances, material balancing, borrow and waste requirements, and other factors affecting earthwork costs and production.
  • Coordinate with estimators, project managers, superintendents, survey personnel, and other team members to validate quantities, assumptions, and construction methods.
  • Assist in developing quantity summaries, takeoff documentation, estimate workbooks, and other deliverables required for bid submissions.
  • Review addenda, revised plans, and design changes to assess their impact on quantities, pricing, and project scope.
  • Support the preparation of bid clarifications, scope reviews, and quantity comparisons for subcontractors, suppliers, and internal estimating teams.
  • Maintain organized digital project files, model revisions, quantity reports, and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy and traceability.
  • Assist in the transition of awarded projects from preconstruction to operations by providing final quantity takeoffs, digital models, and relevant estimating information.
  • Stay current with AGTEK, AutoCAD, digital modeling tools, and evolving technologies used in heavy civil construction and earthwork estimating.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of preconstruction, estimating, and company objectives.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in heavy civil construction, earthwork estimating, quantity takeoffs, CAD drafting, or digital construction modeling; equivalent relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Proficiency in AGTEK software for earthwork modeling, quantity takeoffs, and cut-and-fill analysis is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, including the ability to review and work with civil drawings, surfaces, alignments, contours, and design geometry.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil construction plans, grading plans, profiles, cross-sections, specifications, and topographic surveys.
  • Preferred but not required, experience operating drones for aerial site surveys, progress documentation, and construction mapping; must possess or be willing to obtain an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
  • Understanding of earthwork operations, grading, material balancing, import/export calculations, and heavy civil construction methods.
  • Experience supporting construction cost estimates, bid preparation, quantity calculations, or construction planning is preferred.
  • Familiarity with renewable energy, utility-scale solar, battery storage, electrical infrastructure, site development, or other large-scale civil construction projects is a plus.
  • Experience operating RTK-equipped commercial drones for construction surveying, topographic mapping, and site documentation.
  • Experience collecting aerial survey data and processing imagery using Pix4D (Pix4Dmatic, Pix4Dmapper, or equivalent).
  • Ability to process drone survey data into orthomosaics, digital surface models (DSM), digital terrain models (DTM), and point clouds.
  • Experience exporting processed survey data, including LAS/LAZ point clouds and georeferenced orthomosaics, for integration into Agtek software.
  • Familiarity with using drone-generated data to support earthwork takeoffs, existing ground surface models, cut/fill analysis, and construction progress tracking.
  • Ability to plan and execute drone missions while maintaining appropriate RTK corrections, ground control, and coordinate system accuracy.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to identify inconsistencies in plans, quantities, and digital models and communicate findings effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, for quantity analysis, reporting, and estimating support.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize deadlines, and work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong written, verbal, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with estimating, preconstruction, engineering, and field operations personnel.
  • A proactive approach to identifying constructability issues, improving workflows, and developing practical solutions.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable.
